    Saint

We’re not sure what to think about a place that calls itself a ‘Boutique Nitery.’ It is more intimate than most clubs, thanks to its small size and basement setting. There are essentially two rooms: a cozy, crimson-colored lounge with carpet on the ceiling, and a white marbly dance room that looks like a bad movie interpretation of heaven. Reserve online or arrive right at 10pm to ensure you get in. No cover before 10:30pm.

    Hong Kong

Climb straight past the 1st floor’s greasy lo-mein dispenser to the low-budget disco above. One level is a bar full of people drinking giant scorpion bowls (use a long straw to suck a future hangover out of communal mixing crockery). Above it is a dark room illuminated by a single disco ball packed with a racially diverse mix of townies, Harvard kids and slumming BU students. Slightly seedy.

    Soho

The warm wood tones of this two level club evoke a kind of Scandinavian modern design. Since this is Boston, there are also TVs everywhere, including the bathrooms. The result is a confusing mix - yeah, there are a hundred young professionals dancing, but the West Coast feed of that Bruins game might also demand your attention. Despite all those TVs, watch out for the enforced dress code.

    Liquor Store

Even too cool for school hipsters secretly like this over-the-top club. To start, it's got a mechanical bull. And you can ride it, though cheeseball management generally prefers that you be a girl wearing a bikini top when you get in line. Better: they serve 40s in brown paper bags. Also on offer are packed dance floors and elevated stages with poles.

    Kells

If you'd like to gaze at the midriffs of hundreds of gussied-up BU students (or perhaps expose your own), head to the Kells where you can find a lot of dance partners with itchy crotches. It's the kind of place where Bacardi sponsors special events, management comes up with lots of gimmicks to attract the ladies and there's beer pong on Mondays.

    Modern

With clean lines and a sleek chrome and glass bar, this narrow lounge is the most elegant space in the Lansdowne complex. Though there's little in the way of a dance floor, high heel depressions embedded in a long leather couch running along a wall reveal how some girls improvise when the hip-hop gets loud. Dress to impress or be denied entry.

    Middlesex

Sleek and sophisticated, Middlesex brings the fashionable crowd to the Cambridge side. Black modular furniture sits on heavy casters, allowing the cubes to be rolled aside when the place transforms from lounge to club, making space for the beautiful people to become entranced with DJs experimenting with French pop and electronica.

    Venu

To signal your insider status at this superchic club, pull out your best designer knockoff and arrive fashionably late for DJ-spun tunes. Fun features include Carnival Sunday with music from Brazil, and the hottest Asian night in town (www.asiannight411.com; reservations recommended) on Saturday.

    Bill’s Bar

The self-mocking ‘bastard child of Lansdowne St, ’ this smaller club, with live music and DJs, is packed with Boston University students who live by alternative music. Specialized nights include Reggae Sunday and Karaoke Wednesday, but otherwise Bill’s got live music and DJs working the wax.
