Lonely Planet review

The 1888 Renaissance revival Texas State Capitol shimmers over Austin from its hilltop location like a pink mirage; views of its imposing dome from vantage points around town are protected by law. While you're in the vicinity, take a stroll through the Capitol grounds or wander through the Greek revival-style 1856 Governor's Mansion.

Visitors to Texas' wide expanses won't be surprised to learn that its Capitol was paid for in the one currency that matters most in longhorn country: land. More than three million acres (1,214,056 ha) of the Texas Panhandle were granted to the contractors that raised the magnificent edifice. Today, that grant forms the basis of the famous XIT ranch, once the world's largest fenced property.
