Lonely Planet review for Deep Eddy Cabaret
This great little neighborhood bar is known for its excellent jukebox, loaded with almost a thousand tunes in all genres. Yep, it’s a dive, but a top-rate one.

Austin's best neighborhood beer bar, bar none.
colonelplink recommends this,
Deep Eddy Cabaret is not the "gentleman's club" its name might imply, nor the "dive" it's purported to be, but at 60+ years of age it may be Austin's favorite neighborhood bar. The establishment enjoys proximity to downtown and excellent access to Zilker Park, and has been a grocery and bait store along the way. Curious strippers call daily, but the unusual name merely reflects a bygone time when dancing in an establishment was often announced in its title. The bar's charm is its character and low prices on beer and wine; happy hour (literally just that, 7-8pm M-W) is half price on everything.
"The Eddy" is famous as fertile ground for conversations on the traditional taboos of religion and politics, and, as always, entertainment and music. Discussion of any subject is welcome, but expect no opinion to be above critique. Friendly staff and clientele make this hole-in-the-wall an ideal respite from the self-regard of 21st-century Austin. Texas Longhorns and New Orleans Saints are honored along the walls, among the many photos of patrons and barkeeps present and past.
As noted above the juke is first-rate, featuring great American artists like Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee "Killer" Lewis, Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters, Bob Wills, Stevie Ray Vaughan, JJ Cale, Little Richard, George Jones, Chuck Berry, Uncle Tupelo, Hank Williams, Frank Sinatra, James Brown, B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, Blondie, Willie Dixon, Texas Tornadoes, Sam & Dave, Conway Twitty, Fats Domino, Wanda Jackson, The Mavericks, Steve Earle, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Otis Redding (to name a few). Area service industry folks love the Eddy for its laid-back, almost familial qualities.
Enjoying patronage from downtown and area campuses, the bar sports a relaxed erudition that attracts experts (real and imagined) on almost any topic. But quiet types need not avoid the Eddy: the respectful atmosphere invites repose with a book or smartphone. Outdoor seating available.Good for: beer and conversation
