Bus

MASCOT (Mat-Su Community Transit; 376-5000; www.matsutransit.com; single ride/day pass $2/5) makes six trips daily to Palmer with buses in Wasilla departing from both the Wal-Mart and Carrs. There are also three commuter runs to Transit Center in Anchorage that depart Wasilla Carrs at 5:40am, 8:28am and 3:32pm.

Car & motorcycle

Car

A rental car in Wasilla is cheaper than Anchorage because the city adds only a 12.5% tax; it's the best way to reach Hatcher Pass Valley Car Rental (775-2880; 435 S Knik St) is in downtown Wasilla and has compacts for $45 a day with unlimited mileage.

Train

The Alaska Railroad (265-2494 in Anchorage, 800-544-0552; www.alaskarailroad.com) from Anchorage stops at Wasilla at 9:45am daily in summer if there are paid reservations (otherwise it just blows on by). Fare is $129 to Denali and $179 to Fairbanks. The train from Fairbanks arrives at 6:05pm; the fare to Anchorage is $43. Any of the bus services to Denali will drop you off in town en route far cheaper than the train.
