Getting there & around
The airport is on Amaknak Island, 3 miles from Unalaska. The ferry terminal is even farther north, on Amaknak Island off Ballyhoo Rd. Cab fare to downtown Unalaska costs $11 to $13 from the airport, or $14 to $16 from the ferry. Cabs are readily available all over Dutch Harbor and Unalaska.
Another way to get around is to hire a mountain bike. The extensive, lightly used dirt roads left over from the WWII buildup make great mountain bike trails. You can hire a mountain bike from Aleutian Adventure Sports (581-4489; W Broadway) for $25 a day.
Other than the once-a-month ferry, the only other way of getting out of Unalaska and Dutch Harbor is flying. The town is serviced by PenAir (800-448-4226; www.penair.com) but you book the ticket through Alaska Airlines (800-252-7522; www.alaskaair.com). There are three to four flights daily and a round-trip ticket is $900 to $1000.
