Steese Highway Restaurants

  1. FE Gold Camp

    At Mile 27.9 take a sharp turn up a hill to reach the FE Gold Camp, a national historic site with a charmingly rustic bar and restaurant. There are also hostel-style accommodations, with quaint shared bathrooms. The camp was built in 1925 for the dredging that went on from 1927 to 1957 and removed an estimated around US$70 million in gold (at yesterday's prices).

  2. Steese Roadhouse

    At the time of writing, just about the only culinary option in Central was the unappealing Steese Roadhouse, where, despite half-hearted service, locals crowd the bar to bad-mouth the government.
