Getting there & around
Air
Alaska Airlines (800-426-0333; www.alaskaair.com) has daily northbound and southbound flights year-round, with stops at all main towns. Round-trip advance-purchase fares include Seattle–Ketchikan, Anchorage–Juneau and Ketchikan–Juneau. Smaller airlines serving the region include LAB Flying Service (907-789-9160; www.labflying.com), Taquan Air (907-225-8800, 800-770-8800; www.taquanair.com) and Wings of Alaska (907-789-0790; www.wingsofalaska.com).
Boat
Alaska Marine Highway (800-642-0066; www.ferryalaska.com) calls on the main towns almost daily in summer. The complete trip, from Bellingham, WA, to Haines ($353 per person) stops at ports along the way and must be scheduled in advance. Trips within the Inside Passage include Ketchikan–Petersburg ($60), Sitka–Juneau ($45) and Juneau–Haines ($37). Alaska Marine Highway ferries are equipped to handle cars (Bellingham–Haines $797), but space must be reserved months ahead.
You can also pick up the state ferries from Prince Rupert, British Columbia, to Ketchikan ($60), or twice a month join the special runs across the Gulf of Alaska from Juneau to Whittier ($221).
Train
The narrow-gauge 1890s White Pass & Yukon Railroad (800-343-7373; www.whitepassrailroad.com) links Skagway and Fraser, British Columbia, with a bus connection to Whitehorse, which is situated on the Alcan Hwy ($106).
