  1. Fishing

    From mid-May through September, runs of red, silver and king salmon make the lower Kenai River among the hottest sportfishing spots in Alaska. If you're green to the scene but want to wet a line, first drop by the visitors center where staff members will help you determine where to fish and what to fish for.

    They can also hook you up with a guide who will vastly improve your chances of catching dinner - and of not violating the river's fairly Kafkaesque regulations. Rather go it alone?   2. Soldotna Homestead Museum

    This museum includes a wonderful collection of homesteaders' cabins spread through six wooded acres in Centennial Park. There's also a one-room schoolhouse (that probably looks a lot more fun than the school you went to), a torture-chamber collection of early dental tools and a replica of the $7.2 million check the US paid Russia for Alaska.

  3. BJ's

    Insofar as a hobo can have a home, this squat, cinderblock bar is home to the peninsula's favorite minstrel, Hobo Jim. It's a bit of a dive, but that's the way he likes it.

  4. Sal's Klondike Diner

    Being Soldotna's best stab at a tourist trap, this fun diner is jammed with weary travelers, gabbing locals and frantic waitresses. The meals are both good and ample.

    If you don't have your own fishing rod, you can pick up inexpensive gear from Trustworthy Hardware , right across the highway from Sal's Klondike Diner.

    Despite the odd location, this is a fun hangout, with good coffee, baked goodies, and art - check out the ceiling tiles.

    This supermarket, just before the Soldotna 'Y' junction, has a deli, salad bar, bakery and Starbuck's.
