Without a doubt the most spectacular tour from Skagway is a ride aboard the historic railway of the White Pass & Yukon Route. Two different narrated sightseeing tours are available; reservations are required for both. The premier trip is the Yukon Adventure. At Skagway’s railroad depot you board parlor cars for the trip to White Pass on the narrow-gauge line built during the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. This segment is only a small portion of the 110-mile route to Whitehorse, but it contains the most spectacular scenery, including crossing Glacier Gorge and Dead Horse Gulch, viewing Bridal Veil Falls and then making the steep 2885ft climb to White Pass, only 20 miles from Skagway. You make a whistle stop at the historic 1903 Lake Bennett Railroad Depot for lunch and then board the train to follow the shoreline of stunning Lake Bennett to Carcross. At this small Yukon town, buses take you back to Skagway. The Yukon Adventure departs from Skagway at 7:45am Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday; the fare is $229/115 per adult/child. Note that Lake Bennett is across the border in British Columbia, Canada, so passengers will need to carry passports or other proof of citizenship. The White Pass Summit Excursion (three to 3½ hours, adult/child $112/56) is a shorter tour to White Pass Summit and back. The tour is offered at 8:15am and 12:45pm daily mid-May to mid-September and at 4:30pm Tuesday and Wednesday until early September.
