Getting there & around
The state park makes an excellent side trip for anybody who has a tent, a spare day and the desire to escape the overflow of RVers on Homer Spit. A number of water-taxis offer drop-off and pickup service (round-trip $50 to $80). Because boat access to some of the trailheads is tidally dependent, you'll need to work with them to establish a precise rendezvous time and location - and then be sure to stick to it.
Mako's Water-taxi (235-9055; www.makoswatertaxi.com) is the most respected of Homer's water-taxi services, famed for making timely pick-ups even in foul weather - and for dropping off beer to unsuspecting campers. For most cross-bay destinations it charges $60 per person round-trip with a two-person minimum.
Other good outfits include Smoke Wagon Water-taxi & Charter (235-2947; www.homerwatertaxi.com) and Tutka Bay Taxi (235-7166; www.tutkabaytaxi.com).
