Wineries are scarcer than vineyards in Alaska, but this impressive family-run operation bottles some fine berry-based wines, plus fireweed mead and rhubarb vino. It conducts tours and tastings daily in the summer and sells its product on-site.

    This place is a must-stop destination for wine enthusiasts

    The Bear Creek Winery is high on our list of places we must visit during our time in Homer. Neatly tucked away on the hillside just north of East End Rd you'll find a beautiful little lodge which is surrounded by some of the best scenery Alaska has to offer. Personally we've never stayed at the lodge but we're determined to give it a try next year.

    The winery itself is on the first floor of (what I'd call) the main building. When you enter the winery you'll be greeted by someone who is more than eager to dole out samples of the winery's luscious libations. They give you a score sheet, of sorts, and ask for honest feedback about the wines sampled. The young lady that cheerfully greeted us as we entered stayed right with us the whole time during the sampling which I thought was really cool because we had lots of questions and felt we were getting personal attention which was a very nice touch.

    This year we sampled several offerings from the winery and ended up bringing home some rhubarb, gooseberry, black currant, pomegranate (my personal fav) and wild berry. A 750ML bottle ranged from $18 up to $24. They had more expensive offerings on the list but it wasn’t much more (the most expensive bottle I noted was the Port at $27 / 750ML).

    All-in-all the Bear Creek Winery is a must-see destination for any wine enthusiast visiting Homer. Beautiful location, very friendly staff and great wine – you can’t go wrong.
