Getting there & around

Bus & tram

Bus

There's a scheduled van service between Fairbanks and Prudhoe Bay that, among other things, drops off backpackers along the way. Dalton Highway Express (474-3555; www.daltonhighwayexpress.com) makes the run daily during the summer, spending overnight at Deadhorse and giving you time to take an early-morning oil-field tour before returning the next day. The round-trip fare to the Arctic Circle is $120, Wiseman and Coldfoot $150, Galbraith Lake $210 and Deadhorse $290. If you drive to Coldfoot and catch the shuttle northward, it's $150 round-trip.

Car

Finding somebody to rent you a car in Fairbanks for travel on the Dalton is a major challenge. Don't even bother with the used-car firms or most national franchises. Arctic Outfitters (474-3530; www.daltonhighway.com) has sedans equipped with two spare tires for $139 a day, or $99 per day for four days or more. GoNorth (479-7272, 866-236-7272; www.gonorthalaska.com) rents SUVs and pickups, as well as bed-equipped campers that start at around $150 per day with unlimited mileage.
