Getting there & around
The only way to reach Barrow is to fly. Alaska Airlines (800-468-2248, 852-4653; www.alaskaair.com) charges about $470 for a round-trip, advance-purchase ticket from Fairbanks and about $560 from Anchorage.
Such fares make package tours attractive. A same-day excursion, which includes airfare from Fairbanks and a town tour, but not meals, is $415 through Alaska Airlines, or $565 ($465 for double occupancy) if you want to stay overnight.
Once on the ground, the airport is an easy stroll from all three hotels, and most other points of interest can be reached by walking as well. If bad weather blows in, however, cabs are available for $5. Try Arctic Cab (852-2227), Barrow Taxi (852-2222) or City Cab (852-5050). Cars can be rented through UIC Auto Rental (852-2700).
