  3. Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce

On just two days a year (the first Saturday in April and October), the public is permitted to tour the Trinity Site, where the first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16, 1945, 35 miles west of Carrizozo. The eerie tour includes the base camp, the McDonald Ranch house where the plutonium core for the bomb was assembled, and ground zero itself. The test was carried out above ground and resulted in a quarter-mile-wide crater and an 8-mile-high cloud mushrooming above the desert. The radiation level of the site is ‘only’ 10 times greater than the region’s background level; a one-hour visit to ground zero will result in an exposure of one-half to one millorentgen (mrem), two …

    Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour

This famous ‘underground’ tour, which takes you through the tunnels and sidewalks hidden beneath the streets of Pioneer Square, might get a little corny at times, but it delivers the goods on historic Seattle as a rough and rowdy industrial town. The tour starts at Doc Maynard’s Public House, named after one of the city’s founding fathers and quite a character. An Ohio native, Maynard was divorced when he arrived in the city and was out for a good time; he was vivacious and generous and he liked his liquor. This combination led him to give away cash or land to almost anyone with a promising idea, and he died essentially landless and broke. (The rather revealing epitaph on…

  5. Saugatuck Dune Rides

Saugatuck – known for its strong arts community, numerous B&Bs and gay-friendly vibe – is one of the most popular resort areas. You can huff up the stairs to the grand views atop Mt Baldhead, a 200ft-high sand dune. Then race down the north side to beautiful Oval Beach. The Saugatuck Dune Rides provide a half-hour of good, cheesy fun spent zipping through the sand. After, jump aboard the Saugatuck Chain Ferry, and the operator will pull you across the Kalamazoo River.

  6. Tourmobile

Tourmobile’s primary tour runs around the National Mall, Capitol, White House and out to Arlington National Cemetery. GAEA Guides

GAEA Guides offers superb, ecofriendly tours with professional naturalists and run a variety of tours through the Great Calusa Blueway. With almost 200 miles of kayaking routes, the Great Calusa Blueway is like a watery circulation system that beats throughout Lee County. The warm, calm waters are a joy to paddle through, and there’s a lot you miss on land that’s only visible by boat. Check the website for information on ‘trails’ throughout the county and where they can be accessed.

    Sf Seaplane Tours

Soar skyward and hang in the air like a bird playing on an updraft while you get a new perspective of the city. This tour company has been operating seaplanes for over 60 years, and experienced pilots will take two to six passengers (depending on aircraft size) up and point out landmarks while cruising along at a leisurely pace. Pickups and drop-offs are at Pier 39; from there, they'll bring you to the seaplane base 4 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in picturesque Marin.

  9. Nevada Test Site

About 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, starkly scenic US Hwy 95 rounds the Spring Mountains and passes a side road signposted ‘To Mercury.’ Behind barbed wire lies the Nevada Test Site, where over 900 atmospheric and underground nuclear explosions were detonated between 1951 and 1992. Free public bus tours depart monthly, usually from Las Vegas’ Atomic Testing Museum, but you must apply for reservations months in advance.

    City Segway Tours

In case you don’t know, Segways are essentially electronic two-wheeled scooters that move about by intuitive control (which basically means just about anyone can operate one). You may look a little ridiculous, but this is a great way of covering ground, getting a street view and never breaking a sweat. The City Segway tour takes in the major sites on the Mall and in Downtown, and is reliably considered one of the better operators in the District.

    Miami Duck Tours

Is it a bus, or is it a boat? No, you won’t look too cool gliding through South Beach on this bus/boat hybrid, but the wacky vehicle run by Miami Duck Tours does provide a nice, high perspective (and amusing commentary) of South Beach and downtown Miami sites, and, when it enters the water, the moneyed homes of Biscayne Bay shores. Tours depart hourly and last 90 minutes.
