    In mid-June, the raucous Motorcycle Week draws two-wheeled crowds to the New Hampshire International Speedway, south of Laconia. Races, shows and other spectacles create quite a scene. Bikers are everywhere.

    Aspen is justifiably proud of its recreation center, which is loaded with facilities including pools and hot tubs, an ice rink and a climbing wall. Its Aspen Youth Center runs craft sessions, parties and other activities for kids aged eight to 18; summer fun includes roller hockey and skateboarding.

    San Francisco Disc Golf

    If you love to throw Frisbees, head to the tranquil woods of Golden Gate Park to find a permanent 18-hole disc-golf course, enjoyed by cultish veterans and reckless beginners. You can rent a bag of flying saucers at Golden Gate Park Bike & Skate, and limber up for tournaments, which kick off Sundays from 8:30am to 10am.

    This modern 28-acre, five-building facility, perched atop a waste refinery (not as crazy as it sounds), has an indoor Olympic-size pool, an outdoor lap pool, a fitness room, basketball and tennis courts, a running track around a soccer field, a kids’ area and a roller-skating rink (with ice skating from November to March).

    Pins seem ungainly and bowling shirts unthinkable once you've joined the sweater-clad enthusiasts on America's first public bowling green. Free lessons are available from member volunteers at noon on Wednesdays and Saturdays; call to confirm volunteer availability. Flat-soled shoes are mandatory, but otherwise people dress for comfort and the weather – though all-white clothing has been customary at club social events since 1901.

    San Francisco Model Yacht Club

    Kids go nuts for the impeccable scale-model yachts that sail on an oversized fountain called Spreckels Lake. Collectors lovingly build and maintain these ship-shape crafts in the adjacent clubhouse, and occasionally throw miniature regattas (check the website). Turtles sunbathe on the shore – Spreckels Lake has become a refuge for wayward and abandoned turtles.

    Circus Center Trapeze

    If you've ever dreamed of running away and joining the circus, indulge your fantasy at this circus-arts school, where adults and kids learn everything from contortionist tricks to the flying trapeze. Serious pupils with red-rubber noses attend the school's Clown Conservatory, the only clown-training school in the US.

    Fulfill your circus dreams, like Carrie did on Sex and the City, flying trapeze to trapeze in this open-air tent by the river. It’s open from May to September, on top of Pier 40.     This massive waterfront sports center caters to the athlete in everyone. You can set out to hit a bucket of golf balls at the four-level driving range, ice skate on the complex’s indoor rink or rent in-line skates to cruise along the new bike path on the Hudson River Park – all the way down to Battery Park. The complex has a jazzy bowling alley, Hoop City for basketball, a sailing school for kids, batting cages, a huge gym facility with an indoor pool (day passes for nonmembers are $50), indoor rock-climbing walls – the works. The premier rodeoevent of the year is the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, held every December. UNLV Runnin’ Rebels college football and basketball teams enjoy a patriotic local following. With a googly-eyed alien mascot, the minor-league Las Vegas 51s baseballteam, a franchise of the MLB Toronto Blue Jays, plays home games from late April through August.
