Running activities in USA

  1. Mt Marathon Trail

According to (rather suspect) local legend, grocer Gus Borgan wagered around US$100 in 1909 that no-one could run Mt Marathon in an hour, and the race was on. Winner James Walters clocked in at 62 minutes, losing the bet but becoming a legend. The 3.1-mile suffer-fest quickly became a celebrated 4th of July event and today is Alaska's most famous footrace, pitting runners from all over the world against the 3022ft-high peak. In 1981 Bill Spencer set the record at 43 minutes, 23 seconds. Many runners take twice as long, and each year several end up with broken bones after tumbling during the hell-bent descent.

  2. Hash House Harriers

Hash House Harriers is a well-established running club with chapters all over the world. But you shouldn't think of it as an athletic organization. At the end of the run there are wacky ceremonies, plenty of beer and…

  3. Dolphin South End Running Club

'Start slowly and taper off' is the Dolphins' motto. So how hard could it be? While these guys do conduct some more serious runs, every Sunday is given over to the tortoise, and the hare is sent packing. About 50 'racers' assemble for this 6-miler. They wear 'official' numbers and are timed by an official. But mostly they just jog along merrily, chatting, joking and relaxing. At the end of the 'race' all are awarded the blue ribbon. Everyone is welcome; call or check the website for the week's rendezvous point.

  4. Puget Sound Hash Harriers

Runners looking to hook up with running mates can contact a number of Seattle’s running clubs, most of which offer organized runs that usually turn into social events. Active clubs include the Puget Sound Hash Harriers, Seattle Frontrunners and the West Seattle Runners. Also, check sports stores for Northwest Runners, a monthly publication and a good resource for running-related information.
