US Virgin Islands

Sights in US Virgin Islands

  1. Virgin Islands National Park

The National Park Service runs a visitors centre on the dock across from the Mongoose Junction shopping arcade. It's an essential first stop for all travellers interested in exploring the miles of shoreline, pristine reefs, hiking trails and tropical birdlife.

More than 30 species of tropical birds nest in the park, including the bananaquit, hummingbirds and smooth-billed ani. Largely regenerated after 18th-century logging, the island flora is a mix of introduced species and native plants.

  2. Fort Christian

Red-brick Fort Christian is just east of Emancipation Garden and is the oldest colonial building in the Virgin Islands, dating back to 1666. Over the years, the fort has functioned as a bastion, jail, governor's residence and a Lutheran church. The museum inside has interesting historical exhibits.

  3. Estate Whim Plantation Museum

This plantation is St Croix's most striking evocation of its colonial sugracane history. Only a few of the original 150 acres of Whim Plantation survive as the museum, but the grounds thoroughly evoke the days when 'King Cane' ruled the island.
