Coming in at #8, San Martyn Del Yi Estancia in Uruguay is recommended by Lonely Planet Magazine reader Robert Evans.
‘I spent an incredible few days staying on an authentic cattle ranche, the San Martyn Del Yi Estancia, in the predominantly agricultural department of Flores. I loved the tranquillity of the estancia. Riding home after an evening picnic on the banks of the Yi River, the sun had long set and there was a blanket of uninterrupted stars like I have never seen. As my horse led me back to the ranch across the rolling granite plains, we passed through the blinking lights of hundreds of fireflies. I felt like a true gaucho.’
Wondering what came in at Travel secret #8? How about #6 - a place known to engender ‘jump-for-joy excitement’?

If I'm not mistaken photo of the "historic and weathered pink house" above is actually in Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay - a delightful place, albeit somewhat less secret.

Steveomac, you're right, the pink house is definitely in Colonia (I've been there twice) look also at the huge cobble-stones that are all over old Colonia. The estancia mentioned has white-washed walls. It is in the Flores region (central-south). However the horses ride on the beach on the east-coast. You bet there are no lighthouses on the river Yí.

The carreta monument (on picture) is in montevideo in parque batlle, not in Canelones.
