    Cavalli Club

Recession? Did anybody say recession? Not Roberto Cavalli, Italian fashion designer of over-the-top glam, rock, animal print, uberbling fame. And now he’s got his own nightclub where the rich and beautiful keep the Champagne flowing like it’s still 1999 amid a virtual Aladdin’s cave of black quartz and Swarovski crystals. Girls, wear your little black dress or risk feeling frumpy. Boys, shine your shoes. Enter from the back of the hotel.

    Jambase

If you enjoy dining, drinking and dancing without changing location, this moody basement supper club should fit the bill. The ambience gets increasingly lively as blood alcohol levels rise and the band moves on from mellow jazz to soul, R&B, Motown and other high-energy sounds. The food’s continental (think prime rib, roast chicken, mains Dh90 to Dh160) and solid if nothing out of the ordinary.

    Zinc

This reliable standby has a killer sound system and plays R&B, popular tunes and house for a crowd that likes to have fun without the pretence, including lots of cabin crew. Though some uppity expats call it trashy, Zinc is good because people don’t seem to care who you are; they’re here to dance and drink, not show off. Bar service is quick – well, for Dubai. Men pay cover, women don’t.

    Alpha

Rebooted from a restaurant, Alpha may be comparatively small but it looms large on the Dubai party circuit. There’s a pleasant low-key vibe to the bi-level space, with a downstairs dance floor and a cushy upstairs lounge. The crowd defines the word ‘eclectic’ and so does the line-up, with everything from local bands to prominent DJs playing house and techno bringing in the punters.

    Sanctuary

At this mega-‘meet’-market, some of the world’s top DJs whip mostly wrinkle-free, hormone-happy dancers into a frenzy with electronica, house and dance music. Brought to you by the folks behind Buddha Bar, the decor is suitably dramatic: a sunken dance floor, suspended circular catwalk and VIP retreats. Pack attitude and credit cards. Thursday is buzziest.

    Fridge

Music promoter the Fridge also presents the occasional concert in its funky warehouse venue in the industrial Al-Quoz district. It’s big on local talent who are still below the radar, and features a super-eclectic line-up that may include a Japanese shakuhachi flute player, a dancing harpist or a Brazilian guitarist. Check Time Out for upcoming performances.

    Ikandy

Wear white to Ikandy and your clothes will glow in the diffuse hot-pink light reflecting off the diaphanous fabric hanging from the palm trees. The vibe is chill, almost mellow, helped along by the rooftop poolside setting, the ambient sounds and the inventive cocktails (try the Thai martini made with lemongrass and basil). Stellar views of the Burj Khalifa.

    Apartment

Another entry in Dubai’s growing cadre of club lounges, this one has a beautifully calibrated seductive feel with fiery mood lighting and low-slung couches with gold and copper accents. There’s a lot of SM (standing and modelling, that is) going on, but once past the tough bouncer you too can be part of the beautiful crowd.

    SAX

There aren't too many places to dance the night away in Abu Dhabi. Your most memorable night in town is the wild Tuesday Lebanese night at swish SAX where you'll meet a sophisticated crowd of friendly Arab expats dancing to the excellent improvisational band and DJ.
