Za’abeel Park
This 51-hectare park has gorgeous lakes, ponds, a jogging track, a skateboard park, a BMX track and retail and food facilities – not to mention fabulous views of the Sheikh Zayed Rd skyline. The latest attraction to open here is Stargate, a space-themed amusement park aimed at kids aged four to 14. It consists of five domed buildings (named Earth, Moon, Saturn, Mars and Ufo) where they can race go-karts, ride a roller coaster, take a spin on a small ice rink or watch 3D movies.

Dubai Dolphinarium
Since summer 2008, the resident bottlenose dolphins and fur seals of the Dubai Dolphinarium have delighted audiences with their tricks and stunts. Private swimming sessions with Flipper’s cousins are also available (Dh1600 for up to three people). Although now quite popular, the facility’s opening generated significant criticism from animal rights activists contending that these magnificent creatures should not be held in captivity.

Dolphin Bay
Dolphin Bay is the place to make friends with those sociable finny mammals known for their playfulness and intelligence. Touch, hug or kiss them in a shallow pool or catch a piggyback ride to the deeper waters of the lagoon. Animal welfare activists believe that human interaction exacerbates the dolphins’ stress already wrought by captivity, but people sure seem to be thrilled by the experience.

Safa Park
This very popular park stretches for 1km from Al-Wasl Rd to Sheikh Zayed Rd. Lots of cricket is played on the wide grassy expanses at weekends, and after dark the rides (near Al-Wasl Rd) get busy. There are tennis courts, a soccer pitch, barbecues, an artificial waterfall, and a lake where you can hire paddle boats.
