  1. Al-Ghurair City

If seeing all those flowing robes has made you want your own checked keffiyah (or gutra, as they're called in the Gulf), grab yours at Al-Ghurair City, the place to shop for national dress, offering stylish abayas and shaylas, quality leather sandals, and dishdashas in chocolate and slate (popular for winter). Be forewarned: the floorplan is confusing.

  3. BurJuman Centre

Dubai's answer to Beverly Hills, BurJuman has one of the highest concentrations of high-end labels and an easy-to-navigate floorplan with wide expanses of shiny marble. Too bad it's freezing inside. Max out your credit card at Saks Fifth Avenue, Dolce and Gabbana, Donna Karan, Kenzo, Calvin Klein, Etro, Christian Lacroix, Cartier and Tiffany.

  4. Deira City Centre

Though other malls are bigger and flashier, Deira City Centre remains a stalwart for its logical layout and wide selection of shops, from big-name chain stores like H&M and Zara to independent shops carrying good carpets, souvenirs and handicrafts. 5. Dubai Festival City

Billed as an 'urban retail resort', Festival City is so massive that you half expect to see a 747 parked outside. 6. Dubai Shopping Festival

Every year from mid-January to mid-February, the month-long Dubai Shopping Festival (www.mydsf.com) draws hoards of bargain-hunting tourists from around the world. 7. Ibn Battuta Mall

The 14th-century Arab scholar Ibn Battuta travelled 75,000 miles over 30 years. You'll have a better idea how he felt after trekking from one end of this behemoth mall to the other. The architectural theme and decorative elements reflect his trip from China to Andalusia; look for a full-size Chinese junk lying on its side and a fabulous Persian tiled dome. If you're too exhausted to walk back to your starting point, hop on the golf-cart shuttle (around Dh5 ).

  8. Jumeirah Emirates Towers Shopping Bouvelard

This exclusive shopping arcade in Emirates Towers is home to swish designer boutiques such as Armani and Gucci on ground level, and Pucci and Jimmy Choo upstairs, along with our favourite, chic Villa Moda. Noodle House is here when you need to refuel, and The Agency for shopping post-mortems.

  9. Mall of the Emirates

The most popular mall in Dubai - and formerly the biggest - sprawls with acres of polished white marble. The curiosity of Ski Dubai is a major draw, as are the remarkably good food court and Dubai's best cinema, Gold Class. The major drawback is crowds at peak periods. Along with the usual brands, there's also a Harvey Nichols and a great big Borders with an awesome selection of travel books (be nice and they may show you the banned-book list).

  10. Mercato Mall

At first glance Mercato looks like a European train station with an arched glass ceiling. A closer look reveals fake facades of palazzos and soaring murals of Venice, leaving you wondering, why? (Ah, Dubai.) Still it's fun to wander the brick colonnades, and the compact size makes shopping here easy.
