Lonely Planet review for Vu’s
As the name implies, the views are stellar from this formal white-tablecloth dining room popular with the Rolex crowd celebrating the inking of a deal. That said, given the state of the economy, this place has certainly seen buzzier times, especially at night when it’s so quiet you’ll want to speak in a hushed voice. The current chef is heavily into culinary alchemy, weaving dishes from seemingly incongruous ingredients. A recent menu featured slow-roasted pork belly paired with pan-fried scallops. Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much.

Almost the best "vu's" in Dubai
beckywicks recommends this,
I've been in Dubai for almost two years now, and not since I arrived and stood beneath the Burj Al Arab for the first time, (and more recently at the newly opened Observatory in the marina, on the 52nd floor of the Harbour Hotel) have I been forced to gasp in amazement at a view. Actually, so impressed was I by the “Vu’s” on the 50th floor that a childlike squeal escaped my lips and I had to fight the urge to rush ahead of my boyfriend and spread my fingers over the glass!
Floor to ceiling windows offered just a touch of shading at the bottom probably for sufferers of vertigo - in fact, the feeling was almost like dining in a really fancy airplane as Dubai spread out beneath us like a neon blanket.
We opted for one of the Chef de Cuisine's (Emil Minev) special set menus to get the best of the bunch. My boyfriend was a little dubious of the fois gras, but it was amazing, served seared with caramelized mango and ginger dressing. Roasted scallops with avocado puree, crispy squid and oriental dressing were also incredible. How does an avocado puree work exactly? Soft, squidgy... who knows, but now we never want our scallops with anything else!
Possibly the best thing of all though, was the dessert - a warm chocolate fondant with... wait for it... ground black olives. Weird but wonderful, and the best bit? Each course comes with its own recommended wine!
Don't be tempted just to head to Scarletts for dinner - the noisy bar downstairs that's frequented by air hostesses (and men who like air hostesses). Once you’ve been to Vu's, you'll definitely be a bigger fan of the 50th floor! You might need to save up a bit though, first.
Vu's set menus start at Dhs280 per person (about 60 GBP).
