Kan Zaman
While on a trip to Heritage Village, stop by this Creekside favourite to munch on mezzes and grills (the tangy lamb shwarma is delish) or fresh saj manakish (pastry topped with cheese, thyme, meat or other ingredients). During the cooler months, sit on the big outdoor patio and watch the passing parade of boats against the backdrop of historic Deira and Bur Dubai.

Bastakiah Nights
One of the city’s most romantic restaurants, Bastakiah Nights occupies a restored courtyard home with fabulous old Arabian-style atmosphere. The menu is mostly Lebanese but also includes a few Emirati dishes. Though you can order à la carte, we recommend the set menu, which includes soup, copious mezzes and a choice of mains, such as mixed grill or lamb stew. It’s not the best food in town and service is sometimes weak, but on a balmy evening the candlelit courtyard, with the indigo night sky overhead, can’t be beat. No alcohol.

Al-Khaima
In the cooler months there are few places more romantic than the majlis-style tents in the garden of the relaxed Meridien resort. Classic mezzes like baba ghanooj, hummus and fattoosh are orchestrated into culinary symphonies, although the enormous platters of charcoal-grilled kebabs being rushed to your table are just as sterling. Wind down the evening pasha-style while languidly puffing on the sheesha.

na3na3
If you’re new to Arabic food, the bountiful and beautifully displayed buffet in this bright and airy restaurant would be a good place to start a culinary investigation. You’ll probably be tempted to make an entire meal from the mezze (appetiser) selection alone, but that would mean missing the hot dishes and freshly baked breads streaming from the open kitchen. The curious name, by the way, means ‘mint’ in Arabic and is pronounced ‘nana’.
