The premium accommodation at Dar-Al Masyaf models itself after the Arabian summer palace with an assemblage of grande-luxe villas, each with eight to ten rooms. Privacy is the watchword here: each of the 29 villas is surrounded by lush landscaping and meandering canals, far from tourists' ogling eyes.

Each of the villas is built around a courtyard, with a gurgling fountain at its centre. You can rent one room or all ten - the ideal choice for a luxury family retreat. Rooms are done in soft, traditional Arabian colours complemented with rich blues, and styled with inlaid tile flooring, Oriental rugs and antiqued wooden doors. The bathrooms are among Dubai's best, with huge walk-in rainfall showers and enormous freestanding tubs. A butler leads you to your room and remains on call to answer your every whim. The only drawback is that you have to take an abra (water taxi) to get anywhere. Such is the price of seclusion.
