The Crowne Plaza is unlikely to win any design awards for its hollow-structured multi-floored tube of a building. What it lacks in grace and elegance, however, it makes up for in value for money, convenient location and good service.
Ascending into the gods in a glass lift is all well and good if there's something to look at en route; in the Crowne Plaza there's only the identikit floors and the very long way down. The lobby, coffee shop and some of the restaurants suffer from being at the bottom of the very long way down and are rather oppressive because of it. But if aesthetics are not a top priority, the excellent rate for comfortable 'fully operational' rooms, the friendly and efficient service, and the location in the heart of the commercial district make this a bargain of a hotel. The ambience is relaxed as people make the best of a long working trip away from home. Executive rooms come with a free bar, canapes and use of the business centre - this may just tip the balance in the hotel's favour.
