The Utterly Amazing Ukraine
Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 30 August 2011
As a native English speaker, I hit the traveling jackpot. Wherever I go anywhere in the world, I never have a problem communicating with people. English is the lingua franca of the world, and if anything is ever in a second language, it is always English. In hostels, people from around the world converse with [...]

Blog: Canada's Adventure Couple - 15 August 2011
We hadn’t seen another Mongol Rally vehicle since the Czech Out party just across the border of the Czech Republic. Since we had spent and extra day there to go on a Segway Tour in Prague, we were sure that most people were at least a day ahead of us.

Kiev Paperwork Forgery – Mongol Rally
Blog: Ottsworld - 11 August 2011

Ukraine Highway Culture – Mongol Rally
Blog: Ottsworld - 10 August 2011
Today we were on what seemed like a super highway for Ukraine as we traveled from Odessa to Kiev. Finally – some smooth tarmac – hallelujah! However, as I sped down this highway constantly trying to go the ever changing, never-marked, speed limit I was stunned by the culture along the highway in Ukraine. [...]

Ukraine Hardships – Mongol Rally
Blog: Ottsworld - 9 August 2011
Every day brings with it a new driving challenge it seems – today’s was potholes. We had heard horror stories about the roads in Ukraine, but it’s hard to really imagine and believe until your wheel has been swallowed up by a huge hole and you hear the sounds of metal hitting concrete. It felt [...]

Crossing Borders with Natasha- Mongol Rally
Blog: Ottsworld - 8 August 2011
We unpacked the whole car in the McDonald’s parking lot only to repack it all up again. We had to prepare - prepare for our first border crossing into the ‘wild East’; Eastern Europe that is. We moved electronics into secure places, I hid my cash in my feminine products such as my tampon bag [...]

Along the road
Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 16 May 2011
by Jacqueline Gunn, KF13 Ghana, KF14 Ukraine For the past 7 months I have been roaming the world as a Kiva fellow. I began in the lovely town of Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana where I spent my days in the office and my evenings and weekends on the beach. When I applied for a second fellowship, my only request was that it provided contrast to Ghana. Working in an industrial factory city in Eastern Ukraine has certainly delivered that.

Get into the groove
Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 15 March 2011
Whilst I was in Ghana life felt very easy. I was really fortunate to be visiting clients on field trips once a week, the sun was shining and life by the beach was fun and very relaxing. In February I moved to the Ukraine for Kiva Fellowship number two and I’ll be honest, it was a bit of a challenge. I’m pretty good with changing environments but it was like life was flipped 180 degrees. Then i realised what was missing... Kiva clients!
