Harem is an unusual thing - an upscale Crimean Tatar restaurant. Mostly, they're quite casual. But on the terrace or in the lovely tiled Oriental room, you can sample a wide range of the Tatar cuisine, from top-notch deniz (seafood soup), biber-sarma (sweet peppers stuffed with minced beef, rice and spices) and lampa bykadina (bull's testicles grilled in brandy). French, Italian, Chilean, Argentinean and Georgian wines provide libation, and there are hookah pipes.

Big disappointment - took Lonely Planet's advice and booked for my girlfriend's birthday (a deposit was demanded for the reservation). Very limited and expensive wine selection - which you can only buy by the glass - unlike the (local only) champagne which is only by the bottle... The 'Local Crimean Tartar salad' starter was a real disappointment - it was just some lettuice leaves with some slices of cold ?beef. And then had a lamb kebab (one of their specialities - cooked over a charcoal barbeque at one end of the terrace) which nearly killed me. I'm confident this was the offending item as my girlfriend and I ate exactly the same otherwise all weekend and she was fine. I however wasn't and spent the next day in the bathroom with diarrhoea and vomiting. I was too ill to travel so had to buy new flights, which made the experience both painful and expensive. And I don't know which terrace the reviewer was talking about - it is a covered front area next to the road - with a view of the adjacent Soviet slums and a constant waft of sewage and vehicle pollution. The 'lovely' Oriental tiled dining room was dingy and empty apart from a couple of local alcoholics. To be charitable, the barman was making some interesting looking cocktails while I was waiting for the (one) (dirty) toilet and you might be safe if you were only drinking however I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. McDonalds is around the corner if you are hungry.
