New Ukraine 4 guide - Special Traveller Updates (May 2014)

Hi all,

The 4th edition of our Ukraine guide was published in May 2014. Due to the dramatic changes that have taken place in Ukraine since this book was sent to the printer (the Euromaidan protests and the annexation of Crimea), we have produced a special update for travellers, as an addendum for the guidebook. You can download it here.

This update was written after the author's visit to Ukraine in April 2014 and it includes a new chapter as well as the corrected pages from the guidebook.

Kiev Safety

Evening everyone

So were hopefully visiting Kiev next week (see thread: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2374897) but after the most recent conflict inn the centre it seems like things are getting a little dangerous.... just wanted a little advice on the current safety issues and if we are in any danger visiting the city at this time.

I understand the most recent protests are focused around the 'main square' and obviously we're not interested in protesting, but are…

Snooker in Kyiv

Can anyone suggest a place where I can play Snooker in Kyiv?
I'm not a pro - just looking for a place to play.
Also interested in Russian Billiards.
(Somewhere downtown/near the main train station please)

By train from Feodosiya (Crimea) to Moscow

I was hoping for some latest intelligence

I'll be in Ukraine at the end of October, planning to be in Nikolaev and then travel to Feodosiya, then to Moscow (I have a double entry Russian visa). Any issues with trains in either directions? Best way to book? better flying options?

Many thanks

If you're undecided, I vote "go"

Hi -

This post is for those who are on the fence. I just spent a few weeks in Lviv and Kyiv and would like to share a few observations. Before I went, friends and relatives both in Poland and other countries were a little worried about my plans and I have to admit I wasn't sure what to expect. Those worries went away quickly.

First, if you don't mind not getting a lot of sleep, the overnight train from Kraków is a comfortable way to cross the border. Currently it only runs every other day…

Train ticket exchange

Hi -

I bought a train ticket to travel yesterday, but was unable to travel. I am intending to go later today. Does anyone know, is it possible to just get on the train, show my ticket from yesterday, and pay any fee or fare difference for the change in date on the train? I know there are many seats available on the train and it will almost certainly not sell out.

It's a domestic ticket.

Camera shop in Lviv?

Hi -

Anyone know of a camera shop in Lviv they can recommend? I'm looking to buy a filter for my lens, so I'm looking for a place that sells proper DSLR cameras and accessories.

All 4 places listed under "photography" on In Your Pocket are just places to print photos. And it turns out I'm not very good at googling in Ukrainian. :-(
