Walk Turkey's Lycian Way, widely regarded as one of the world's great trails. Gain an appreciation of the landscape of this great country in a way that is impossible from inside a bus. Whether a casual walker or a serious trekker, this active journey will appeal to those looking for a better way to appreciate magnificent scenery. You'll hike through pine forests and olive groves, across flower-filled fields and past shepherd's huts, then unwind in simple, scenic accommodation along the coast. This is adventure at its purest and most simple.
Day 1 Fethiye
Welcome to Fethiye! The remainder of your day is free to explore this bustling coastal town. This evening at 6pm there will be a welcome meeting where you will meet your fellow group members. After the meeting, you may choose to join your CEO and group for an optional dinner in a local restaurant.
From Dalaman Airport, you can catch the public airport bus to Fethiye and get off in front of Fethiye Post Office. The hotel is located just behind the post office. The distance from the Dalaman Airport to Fethiye is about 30-45 minutes.
Days 2 Faralya/Kabak (1B)
The Lycian Way is the longest trekking route in all of Turkey, covering nearly 500 kilometres from Fethiye to Antalya. This is widely regarded as one of the finest treks in the world, and today we set off for our first taste of this walk.
We first take a private van from Fethiye to the small village of Faralya. From here, we take our first walk, enjoying the fantastic views out over the coast and down to the crystal clear water to Kabak, our base for the next three days.
Our accommodation in Kabak is very basic - simple huts with shared bathrooms- but the cliffop views and homely atmosphere cannot be beaten!
Overnight in Kabak
Estimated hiking distance: 6-8km
Estimated hiking time: 2-3hrs (easy terrain)
Day 3 Ovacik/Kabak (1B)
After a short public transfer to Ovacik, walk in the shadow of Mt Babadag along clearly marked paths with the beautiful Turkish coastline alongside you for company before walking back to Kabak for the night.
Day 4 Kayakoy and Oludeniz (1B)
We start the day with a visit to the village of Kayakoy (hiking/exploring the area for 2 hours). This old Greek village became a virtual ghost town overnight when in 1923 the Turkish and Greek governments ordered an immediate population exchange. Now preserved as a museum village, it consists of hundreds of rundown but still mostly intact Greek-style houses and churches, which cover a small mountainside. We will take a lunch break here, a great chance to try gözleme, sometimes called "Turkish pancakes", where fresh pastry is rolled out, filled and sealed, then cooked over a hotplate.
In the afternoon we walk for about another 3 hours along a path through the pine forest with stunning views, ending at the turquoise Oludeniz Lagoon where you can enjoy a refreshing, well-earned swim.
Overnight in Kabak.
Estimated hiking time: 5hrs (moderate terrain)
Day 5 Patara/Kalkan (1B)
We begin our day with a short van ride to the village of Yesikoy where we begin our trek as we follow the Esen River along the Lycian Way. Along the way we can see the ancient Roman aqueduct of Delikkemer, a real engineering feat that carried water all the way from the mountains down to the beach at Patara. Along the trail, where we might see some of Turkey's wild flowers in the right season, and as we pass Tavas village, more beehives, and even several tortoises along the way.
By lunchtime we arrive at Patara. Once a great Roman town, with a temple of Apollo considered second only to that of Delphi, Patara retains impressive ruins. We have time this afternoon to explore these ruins or, if you prefer, relax at the delightful beach here.
In the afternoon, we meet our transfer and head for Kalkan. The town of Kalkan is one of the larger villages along our route, with a wide selection of restaurants where you can enjoy some of the delicious seafood while watching the sunset.
Overnight in Kalkan
Estimated travel distance: 12km
Estimated hiking time: 5hrs (moderate terrain)
Day 6 Kalkan (1B)
Today we follow the Lycian Way through some of the smaller villages inland that make up the trail. Our route will take us through olive groves and past shepherds huts before the trail flattens out and we walk through meadows and fields dotted with houses.
We return to Kalkan where we spend the night.
Overnight in Kalkan.
Estimated hiking distance: 10-12kms
Estimated hiking time: 4hrs (moderate terrain)
Day 7 Kas (1B)
This morning we transfer to the idyllic Mediterranean fishing village of Kas where the rest of the day is free for you to relax. Kas is an activity centre, so you have a pick of activities available to you if you want to try something more active. One option would be to take a boat tour over the sunken ruins of the city of Kekova, or if you are feeling more active, you can try this by sea kayak.
Overnight in Kas.
Day 8 Kas (1B)
After breakfast your CEO can arrange an individual or group transfer to Dalaman Airport which is the most convenient airport to depart from. If you want to make your own way, you can take a bus to Fethiye Bus station and there are regular airport shuttle buses to Dalaman Airport. The trip may take up to 4 hrs from Kas to Dalaman Airport. The private transfer is up to 6 people and aprox. TRY270-300. Local bus is aprox. TRY40-50 p/p.
