Lonely Planet review

Gilded furniture, heavy velvet curtains, plush carpets: Bosphorus Palace Hotel is the ultimate in Ottoman-era palatial extravagance in an unbeatable location right on the Bosphorus. Here you can watch the ferry boats and hulking Russian container ships pass right outside your window. Talk about sensational views!

In the early 19th century a yalĩ, or waterside villa, was a showy wooden summer retreat built along the shores of the Bosphorus. This wonderful hotel was once the yalĩ of Sultan Selim III's Grand Vizier, Damad Melek Mehmet Pasha. In the '80s it was fully rebuilt after being burnt down. Today it offers 14 rooms: some overlook the lovely garden, others overlook the Bosphorus. Each room is decked out in sumptuous furnishings typical of the European influence of the era - it's a living museum. Only the bathrooms are a bit disappointing, having been renovated unsympathetically to the rest of the Palace. The restaurant here was once the boathouse so you can almost dip your toes as you eat. It's a popular spot with Istanbul's upper-crusters. Note that the hotel doubles as a wedding reception venue, so can be overrun with wedding parties.
