    There are no menus in this chain fish restaurant. Just choose a büyük (big) or küçük (small) beastie and it comes in a meal deal with salad, pickles and dessert. The hushed ambience makes it resemble somewhere you'd go with your parents for a birthday dinner. Köfte meals are also available, but the dry baklava isn't recommended. It's on the 1st floor of a shopping arcade.

A good range of drinks is available, including spirits and wine by the glass, but the female-dominated clientele are far from boozy football fans.

Grab a spot at the shared tables arrayed around the mangal (barbecue) grills and tuck into superlative kebaps, fluffy flatbreads and chargrilled veggies. If you're a really hungry carnivore, you can even order specialist cuts of kuzu (lamb) by the kilo.

    Surrounded by traffic around Atatürk Alanı, it's easy to forget Trabzon is a coastal city. Head down Gazipaşa Caddesi and across the bridge to this sprawling fish/chicken/köfte grill house, which doubles as a beer garden. It's guaranteed dolmuş-free, and you can even hire rowboats to steer around the tiny cove.

    Low tables and mood lighting give this welcoming cafe near Trabzon Museum a cosmopolitan vibe. It's perfect for a post-museum coffee and brunch of menemen (scrambled eggs with peppers and tomatoes) or gözleme for a break from Turkish breakfasts. The front tables overlook a side street and, on weekdays, you can choose a mixed plate of four of the seven or eight hot and cold daily dishes.
