Anyone intending to visit Turkey from April 2014 please be aware that there is a new visa rule coming into being as from April 10th 2014.
Currently a great number of people are able to buy a tourist visa on arrival at the Turkish border.As from the above date visa on arrival(VOA)will NO LONGER be available.You will have two choices-
a)buy an e- visa in advance online which you download and print off.
b)apply for a visa from the nearest Turkish Consulate in your home country.

Since joining Thorntree I have been delighted to read so many wonderful trip reviews.These are most often full of the small details so important and useful to independent travellers.How sad then that in time these slip down the forum pages and get lost or forgotten about.All that help…all that typing!So I have trawled through the last 12 months and collated all the trip reviews and,after equal amounts of bullying and flattery,Zabba(mmwwahh!)has agreed to make this a sticky,so it will now be at…

I've never been out of the county before (I am from Chicago, USA) but was given free tickets to go to Istanbul in a week. I will be landing on the 12th and returning on the 18th. I've never traveled anywhere before, let alone outside of the US, so I am freaking out a little bit.
Anyone have any suggestions for a first time traveler? In particular, I am looking for suggestions on hotels/hostels to stay at? Since this was a last minute thing, I don't have a lot of money to spend, so I am…

Here is some good news for those wanting to combine a trip of Turkey and Greece.-
It appears from the article that these flights are in operation as of now.
I'm hoping to visit Istanbul and surroundings in the spring. I know the situation with the Mid-East refugee crisis is volatile and no one can say what it'll be like in the spring. But right now, in Istanbul and surroundings, what is the situation? I get the sense that all the refugee activity is elsewhere in Turkey. But it's hard to tell from news reports.
In a couple weeks I'll be flying via Istanbul Airport and will be in transit when one of the Rugby World Cup semi-finals is on. Does anyone know whether there may be anywhere in the airport that would be showing the match?
I have 10 hours (in total) connection in Istanbul. Both of my flights are to/from Ataturk Airport. I land in Istanbul at 10 AM, leaving me basically a whole day for seeing the city. I understand that I am limited on time and prefer to take my time easily and not to rush from one place to another. So I wonder if anyone could suggest me on some interesting place to see and a good place to eat (preferably vegan friendly) before I board my flight home. Thanks!
I am planning a 12 day trip to Turkey in end-Nov and I hope it's not too late that I'm planning only now.
These are my interests:
* walking through streets of interesting ciites and towns
* sightseeing at nature sites such as valleys, hills, lakes
* chilling at beaches
* I am not so much into history and cultural attractions such as ruins and traditional performance etc
So far, I have decided to stay for about 4 days in Istanbul, and 3 days in Cappadocia (by plane). That will leave me…
