  1. Urfa's Bazaar

    After visiting the Şanlıurfa Museum, ponder your new-found knowledge with a wander through Urfa's bazaar. Spreading itself east of the Narıncı Camii, it is a jumble of streets, some covered, some open, selling everything from sheepskins and pigeons to jeans and handmade shoes. It was largely built by Süleyman the Magnificent in the mid-16th century. The best idea is just to dive in and inevitably get lost. Women should be on guard for lustful hands.

    Rüstem Paşa Çarşısı

    Erzurum is known for the manufacture of jewellery and other items from oltutaşı, the local black amber. You'll find these at the atmospheric Rüstem Paşa Çarşısı, which was built between 1540 and 1550 by Süleyman the Magnificent's grand vizier.

  3. Sıramağazalar Caddesi

    Half a dozen shops along Sıramağazalar Caddesi sell jackets, bags and other garments, with alterations or made-to-measure fittings available - it's a prime area for leather goods. At time of research the standard asking price for a basic soft-leather jacket was US$100, maybe half what you'd pay in İstanbul.

    Russian Bazaar

    Thanks to the influx of cheap goods and materials from the former Soviet territories, Trabzon is a good place to shop for clothes and other essentials, especially from the Russian Bazaar stalls; a T-shirt, complete with designer logo, should set you back just around €3.

    Local Crafts

    If you're after Kurdish carpets, rugs or saddlebags, make a beeline for this shop near the otogar. The affable owner, Osman Akkuş, speaks some English and won't push you into buying. Most items come from the neighbouring villages.
