Anyone intending to visit Turkey from April 2014 please be aware that there is a new visa rule coming into being as from April 10th 2014.
Currently a great number of people are able to buy a tourist visa on arrival at the Turkish border. As from the above date visa on arrival(VOA)will NO LONGER be available. You will have two choices-

b)apply for a visa from the nearest Turkish Consulate in your home country.

The e visa is the…

TURKEY TRIP REVIEWS

Since joining Thorntree I have been delighted to read so many wonderful trip reviews. These are most often full of the small details so important and useful to independent travellers. How sad then that in time these slip down the forum pages and get lost or forgotten about. All that help…all that typing! So I have trawled through the last 12 months and collated all the trip reviews and, after equal amounts of bullying and flattery,Zabba(mmwwahh!)has agreed to make this a sticky,so it will now be at…

Ramazan 2015

I understand that in 2015 Ramazan is from 18 June - 16 July and Bayram from 17-19 July. Would it be OK to come to Istanbul on 17 July, or is it less busy after Bayram?...

Dervish Taboo

I am intrigued and taken with Dervish and Sufi story, history and practice from a cultural (as opposed to religious)standpoint and would love, while in Turkey, to learn/experience more of it. However, I don't want to be a gawking tourist at a lowbrow whirling Dervish show lacking respect.
I am curious how acceptable it is to attend a ceremony and if there are any (even paid events) that embody more than just a tourist show. Also information regarding any particular areas or places which are…

Talking Turkey - Trip Report Sept. 4-18 2014

First, I would like to thank this forum (sarikanarya, swampeastmike, mothercourage and others) for making this trip awesome, it was by far most useful source of information (the tripadvisor forum seem to have more people interested in the cost of beer than anything else)...also made the trip doable for my wife who has MS (we did have some challenging "moments"). I will attempt to give highlights/useful info (?)/surprises rather than describing the sites/museums.
First thing to know - Cash is…

Ruins in North East part of Turkey

I am planning a visit to NE Anatolia and the Aegean coast. I am planning to spend 24 days in the area located between Selguck, Isparta, Eskisehir, Marmara and the Aegean sea. I will explore Bursa, Izmir and surrounding areas 2 weeks .

I have 10 more days, My question is regarding ruins in that part of the country because there seem to be quite a few. LP guide seems to like Bergama and Ephesus. which I am planing to visit. It also talked about Troy, Pamukkale, Afrodisais and Phrygian Valley. I…

Fixing gold jewellery in Turkey

Whoops I just posted this accidentally to the general page for the 'Eastern Europe & The Caucasus' forum so here goes Take 2!

My late father bought my Mum a gold ring with (what we think are) diamonds in it from Turkey or Cyprus years ago and she's asked me now "if I'll get it fixed for her when I next go to Turkey". They want a hideous price to do it here in Australia.

I also have a similar ring with diamond that I wouldn't mind changing or just re-sizing, however, we are both skeptical…

ANZAC Day 2015 madness

Entered Australia's ballot for two tickets to the ANZAC Day dawn service 2015 with 9,999 of my best friends - starting scouting about for tours to get there and accommodation prices. My conclusion is that the world around Eceabat and Gallipoli Peninsula has gone completely mad! Talk about taking advantage of a situation - minimum 100 euro for tours to dawn service - NO walk ins or private transport allowed. minimum 100euro pp for a bed
I am so grumpy and can only imagine inflated prices being…
