Ceramic shopping in Turkey

    İznik Foundation

Recently, İznik tile-making has been undergoing a revival, and that the town is proud of this fact is evident from the posters of tiles on display in many restaurants and hotels. Original İznik tiles are antiquities and cannot be exported from Turkey, but new tiles make great, if not particularly cheap, souvenirs. Good places to start looking are the small workshops along Salim Demircan Sokak, and the workshop belonging to the İznik Foundation.

    Iznik Classics & Tiles

İznik Classics is one of the best places in town to source hand-painted collector-item ceramics made with real quartz and using metal oxides for pigments. Admire the range in the two shops and gallery in the Arasta Bazaar, in the Grand Bazaar store or in the shop at 17 Utangaç Sokak.

    SIR

Ceramics produced in İstanbul can be pricey, but the attractive hand-painted plates, platters, bowls and tiles sold at this small atelier are exceptions to the rule.
