  1. Cercis Murat Konağı

The menu at Cercis Murat Konağı is simply spectacular, featuring dishes that are as delectable to taste as they are gorgeous to behold. Start with the meze tabağı, a sample platter of 12 meze dishes, or opt for individual plates including allucıye (a mixture of greengage, lamb, squash, chives and parsley; TL6), ıncasiye (lamb, chickpeas, plums and pomegranate molasses; TL6) or an extraordinary kibbe stuffed with pomegranate, pistachio and lamb (TL5). Mains include the decadent kaburga dolması (lamb rib stuffed with dolma and slow cooked; TL50 for two people) and desserts range from homemade dondurma (ice cream; TL5) to a platter of unusual crystallised walnut,…

  2. Beyti

Beyti is located in an affluent suburb way out near the airport, but serious meat lovers know that it’s worth the trip. Mr Beyti’s famous kuzu şiş (skewered lamb kebap) and other meat dishes are extraordinarily good and worth every kuruş (cent) of their relatively hefty price tags. Catch the train from Sirkeci or Cankurtaran, exit the station and walk up the hill. A taxi from Sultanahmet will cost approximately TL25.

  3. A

    Ottoman

Featuring regional specialities from Turkey’s east as well as Ottoman dishes, this restaurant – which has a roof terrace and top-floor dining room overlooking the Golden Horn – is as excellent as it is affordable. We’ve eaten here a fair few times with Turks who, after their first mouthful, have immediately called the waiter back to order extra dishes – always a good sign. It’s a 15-minute walk back towards Eminönü from the Fener iskelesi.

  4. Kitchenette

Notable for its huge terrace, club-like bar and buzzing upstairs brasserie, this branch of the Kitchenette chain offers decent but unexciting food, expensive coffee and a moneyed clientele – all of which is expected in this privileged part of town. Look for the elevated grey art deco building on the main road opposite the park and ferry dock.

  5. Tarihi Karaköy Grifin

The original Tarihi Karaköy restaurant is only open for lunch, but the same owners have opened an evening venue, the Tarihi Karaköy Grifin, which has great views over the Golden Horn. It must be said, though, that this part of town is badly lit and can be a little bit scary at night.

  6. B

    Kömür Lokantası

The best lokanta (restaurant serving ready-made food) on the Golden Horn, Kömür is frequented by students from the Kadir Has Universitesi, who come here to choose from the array of dishes based on recipes from the Laz region on the Black Sea.

  7. Ali Baba Köftecisi

İstanbullus cross town for the tasty köfte served at this ever-busy eatery. Enjoy them with piyaz (white beans), pide (Turkish-style pizza) warm from the oven and a dusting of dried crushed chilli.
