A
Orient Restaurant
Juicy steaks and a stack of flavoursome pasta dishes head up the impressive, meaty menu which romps from traditional Turkish to continental cuisine with ease. The outside seating, among blooming roses, and service, is delightful.

B
Göreme Restaurant
The live Turkish music played here every night tends to lure diners off the comfortable floor cushions and onto the impromptu dance floor around the low brass tables. The food is nothing special, but it's well priced and the menu includes 'world kitchen' items such as green curry chicken, stir-fried noodles with vegetables and falafel sandwiches. Beer and rakı (aniseed brandy) flow freely and service is good.

Mercan
Geared towards the bus-tour trade, Mercan doesn't have the best food in Göreme by a long shot, but still has a pleasant terrace where you can sit and eat while gazing over the town.

D
İstanbul Modern Cafe/Restaurant
The cafe/restaurant at İstanbul's pre-eminent contemporary art museum offers an 'industrial arty' vibe and great views over the Bosphorus when there are no cruise ships moored in front. The pasta is homemade, pizzas are Italian-style and service is slick – all of which makes for a happy lunch experience. For a table on the terrace you'll need to book ahead.

Amazon
With its classical music and stools around a bar, the brand-new Amazon looks more wine-bar than restaurant, but the İzmiri chef has a great reputation and serves good international dishes using fresh local ingredients. The set lunch is great value. The paintings hung on the walls are by young local artists and are for sale. Outside there are a few tables with distant views of the Artemis temple.

Vogue
It seems as if Vogue has been around for almost as long as the Republic. In fact, this sophisticated bar-restaurant in an office block in Beşiktas opened just over a decade ago. It's a favourite haunt of the Nişantaşı powerbroker set, who love nothing more than enjoying a drink at the terrace bar before moving into the restaurant for dinner.

8 Istanbul
Heavy on atmosphere but light on attitude, 8 Istanbul caters for all budgets and tastes. The menu is a veritable United Nations, featuring Thai soups, Indian samosas, Chinese spring rolls, Mexican guacamole, Vietnamese salads, Austrian schnitzels and Turkish kebaps. All are competently executed and attractively presented. A DJ spins mood-driven tracks later in the night.

Kale Washington
By far the most elegant eatery in the old town, the 'WR' serves international cuisine to visiting dignitaries (Hillary Clinton reportedly ate here) and some Turkish specialities including halep işi kebap and su böreği. The views from the white tablecloths are most palatable.

Oba Motel Restaurant
Partly housed in a wooden cabin, the restaurant of the leafy Oba Motel has a great reputation for home-style food at palatable prices. It also does great Turkish/European breakfasts (from TL12) including homemade muesli with mountain yoghurt and local pine honey. The menu offers everything from snacks to full-on mains, including a half-dozen veggie options.

Soundwaves Restaurant
This long-running Side eatery is in the same family as the Beach House Hotel, so the vibe is friendly and relaxed. A small, focused menu is delivered by an experienced chef, and there are regular seafood specials. Ask if the excellent swordfish kebaps are available, and kick off with a few meze and a cold beer.

Kahvedan
This expat haven serves dishes such as bacon and eggs, French toast, mee goreng and falafel wraps. Owner Shellie Corman is a traveller at heart, and knows the importance of things such as free wi-fi, decent wine by the glass, keen prices and good music. It’s also an extremely popular bar.

Bizim Ev
The cave wine cellar could easily tempt you into a few lost hours of tasting tipples but if you can make it upstairs the terrace is the place for atmospheric dining. Service is sleekly unobtrusive and the menu ranges from steaks to kebaps to casseroles.

Bordo Mavi
This cosmopolitan garden-cafe adjoins Trabzonspor's clubhouse, and the waiters wear the team strip. You can pick up your own maroon-and-blue top at the merchandise shop nearby. Pizzas, pastas and sandwiches are on the menu alongside breakfast and Turkish meals. A good range of drinks is available, including spirits and wine by the glass, but the female-dominated clientele are far from boozy football fans.
