Since joining Thorntree I have been delighted to read so many wonderful trip reviews. These are most often full of the small details so important and useful to independent travellers. How sad then that in time these slip down the forum pages and get lost or forgotten about. All that help…all that typing! So I have trawled through the last 12 months and collated all the trip reviews and, after equal amounts of bullying and flattery,Zabba(mmwwahh!)has agreed to make this a sticky,so it will now be at…
Istanbul is a treasure trove for photographers so I am sure anyone visitng the city around this date will want to visit this-
I've just returned from Turkey & Georgia and thanks to Metro Turizm I could still be there! One screw up is acceptable but a long list of them pretty much means I will go out of my way to avoid using these clowns in the future!
Istanbul to Batumi.
Made to change buses before even leaving the otogar. The new bus got us two hours down the road to Dudullu (sp?) where we were dumped for 4 hours with no explanation whatsoever. Eventually another bus arrived and took the 16 hours to Hopa where we…
We're leaving in December for two weeks in Turkey and I've done a lot of research but have a few unanswered questions.
1) I'm wondering if this schedule (http://www.tcdd.gov.tr/files/bolgeseller/basmanedenizli.pdf) is the most current at the moment, or if this (http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/go/Aegean/Izmir/transport/izmir-selcuk_train.html) is the correct one right now. If it's the former...we arrive on a Sun Express flight at 6:10 pm and it looks like 18:48 would be the last train…
Hi folks! With my wife we spent 15 days in east Turkey last August. Not the ideal time to travel to that part of the country but we have going there. Our itinerary: flying Istanbul to Gaziantep – Malatya (Nemrut Dağı) – Cappadocia – Ankara – Amasya – Sinop – Safranbolu – Ankara – flying to Van – Doğubeyazıt – Kars – Georgia. About the security situation. It did not affect our trip but there are obviously places where it is good to have your eyes even more wide open than usual and rely on the…
Jello. I am cycling alone central anatolia and the northeaster turkey in a few days. I am a litle concerne about political situation and about the goberment fighting the pkk. Is it safe to travel on my own in these regions?

Can someone suggest which Pamuk book to start with? I haven't read any yet! Of course I am not limited to only one, but I'd like a good introduction to him and sometimes works can vary greatly. If, for example, you started a dalliance with Graham Green by first reading Stamboul Train, I think you would be very disappointed. He couldn't afford to actually go to Constantinople to write it, and it shows, because he describes the external domes of the Blue Mosque "floating up like a cluster of azure…
Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone would have insights on whether tickets for Besiktas v. Galatasaray on Sept 24 would still be available, and if so, what's the easiest (and cheapest) way to get one? I understand that one needs to have a Passolig card to be able to buy a ticket, but am told it takes about two weeks for the card to be ready upon application. I am also unsure what the process is after the Passolig card is ready!
I am currently in Belgrade, but should be in Istanbul from this…
First trip to Turkey. How long do I need to be at this airport before my domestic flight? I would imagine security concerns have made it more time-consuming so I'll have to arrive earlier than local airports in other countries.
