  6. Homeschooling: The Mediterranean's Fluid Borders

    Blog: AlpacaSuitcase - 14 June 2010

One of things that our kids (and their parents) are learning from our travels in the Mediterranean is how fluid borders are. Roman outposts in Morocco, Greek colonies in Italy, Macedonia dynasties in Egypt, Genoese watchtowers in Corsica and Venetian cities in Greece are but a few examples. It can be easy for non-historians to fall into the trap of thinking that a present-day border contains the history of that country. Our kids have learned that this is not true; a great example of this is Turkey.

  9. Hagia Sofia

Blog: Seat of Our Pants - 7 June 2010

There are very few buildings and architectural monuments that manage to move me emotionally. Istanbul’s ancient Hagia Sofia is a clear exception: a place where history, architecture and religion have clashed over and over again. It is a defining building for this part of the world, and a beautiful one at that. The current Hagia [...] Related posts:Hagia Sofia Walk-through Sometimes, a picture says more than a thousand words.

Sometimes, a picture says more than a thousand words. At other times, it may be necessary to use video to convey our messages. Check out this video below: it’s a walk around the upper gallery of the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. This video is from the ground floor of the same building.

  12. How We Spent an (Almost) Free Day in Istanbul

Blog: Seat of Our Pants - 4 June 2010

Istanbul is not cheap. It’s a bustling metropolis of European caliber price points. But it’s also one of the coolest cities we’ve been to. So how did we handle our day there while managing to stay within our meager backpacking budget? A good pair of shoes, a little imagination and loads of sunscreen.

  19. Leaving Egypt Behind

    Blog: AlpacaSuitcase - 5 March 2010

Our Cairo-Istanbul flight lasted two hours and connected two great, populous Islamic cities whose countries have most of the eastern Mediterranean coastline. Within the first few hours of our arrival in Turkey there were clear differences. In Istanbul, there were fewer head scarves and burkhas and more tight jeans and high heels. We saw virtually none of the forehead bruises that shouted “look how devout I am” and not once had we seen men rolling out prayer mats in the middle of the street to pray.

    Blog: A Lady in London - 1 February 2010

I haven't been to Turkey since I was 14.  My eighth grade class took a cruise through Greece and stopped in Kusadasi for a day.  We ran around Ephesus, tried our bargaining skills at a bazaar, and it goes without saying that we got a factory tour at a rug shop that belonged to our guide's "cousin".

  25. Top 3 Travel Hugs

Blog: REID ON TRAVEL - 10 December 2009

Thursday is for HuggersDo we hug more when we travel? I mean, hug people you've known for 10 minutes and will never see again? I've had some memorable ones -- by teachers on train platforms, grandparents on Polish balconies, drunk telephone line workers near a crocodile-filled pond in the Yucatan. But I've narrowed it down to my most memorable trio:
