Galata Konak Patisserie Café
After checking out the pastries and cakes on sale in the ground-floor patisserie, make your way up the stairs to the roof terrace cafe, where you can order anything that has taken your fancy downstairs or choose from a large and varied menu. For breakfast try the excellent menemen or the super-fresh poğaca (breakfast buns); there are also decadent cakes for morning and afternoon pick-me-ups and kebabs and pastas for lunch. The view, which includes the Sultanahmet skyline, down the Bosphorus and over the Golden Horn, is fabulous.

Baylan Pastanesi
Baylan has been serving its homemade pastries, dondurma (Turkish ice cream) and cakes to appreciative İstanbullus since 1923. This branch dates from 1925, but had its last facelift in 1961, making it a truly funky decorative time capsule. To the rear of the shop there’s a courtyard complete with astroturf and a profusion of hanging baskets – a great spot to scoff a fabulous caffe glace (iced coffee with dondurma ), a top-notch espresso or a plate of profiteroles.

Saray Muhallebicisi
This muhallebici is owned by İstanbul’s mayor, no less. It’s been dishing up puddings since 1935 and is always packed with locals scratching their heads over which of the 35-odd varieties of sweets they want to try this time. Try the firin sutlaç, aşure (dried fruit, nut and pulse pudding) or kazandibi (slightly burnt chicken-breast pudding). There are also branches in Eminönüand Nişantaşı.
