Lonely Planet review

This used to be the infamous Sultanahmet prison (remember Midnight Express ?), and boy oh boy, we couldn’t imagine anything better than being forced to do some serious time here these days. A regular entry in ‘Best Hotel in the World’ lists, this place oozes quality and comfort. Rooms are country-club elegant, with king-sized beds, enormous marble bathrooms and antique-style work desks. Location is ideal – the hotel is literally in the shadow of the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofya – but the fact that an extension is currently being built at the rear of the hotel site (on top of an important archaeological site – how on earth was that approved?!) means that building noise could be a slight problem until completion. Breakfast costs an extra €30 per person.
