Since joining Thorntree I have been delighted to read so many wonderful trip reviews. These are most often full of the small details so important and useful to independent travellers. How sad then that in time these slip down the forum pages and get lost or forgotten about. All that help…all that typing! So I have trawled through the last 12 months and collated all the trip reviews and, after equal amounts of bullying and flattery,Zabba(mmwwahh!)has agreed to make this a sticky,so it will now be at…
I'm going to Iran soon and after a few weeks of travelling I want to cross the border to Turkey at Kapiköy (Van). I've read that there aren't any trains anymore but what about busses? And what about the safety? I want to go to Istanbul, but also visit Van, Diyarbakir, Dersim. Is this possible or would you recommend to take the bus over Armenia, Georgia and the black sea?
we are currently in Malatya and want to go to Mt. Nemrut tomorrow. As far as I understand we would head east from Malatya towards Elazig and then turn right and follow a mountain road to Mt. Nemrut (as google maps shows). Can we then continue across the mountain towards Diyarbakir or do we have to go back to Malatya? we read some older articles saying that you cannot cross the mountain from north to south, is this still true?
Thanks a lot for your help!
News just breaking. Quite alarming when I spent 3 days in this area in 2014. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/reports-explosion-rocks-turkish-city-of-bursa/2016/04/27/3afe3048-0c8c-11e6-bc53-db634ca94a2a_story.html
Hello, we will go next week to turkey with our own (Austrian plate) vehicle
We will take İpsala Sınır Kapısı border from Greece and we plan to buy car insurance there
Does anybody know the costs or link to insurance company to order in advance
What is the price for shortest period (we need just 2 weeks)
The vehicle is a Van with 8 seats and 2805kg weight (140hp)
thanks for your help
We drive to Cappadocia, if anybody need a ride, we have free seats :-)
I'm starting to plan for next September's trip and am having a problem finding buses. Or, rather, the only one I find - www.batiantalyatur.com.tr - seems to charge an exhorbitant price for the two legs, at 22 and 25 TL respectively. Which is a lot, considering the distances involved.
I'm sure there must be cheaper ones. Local dolmuses, perhaps? Can anyone confirm?
I am really struggling to make a decision between Istanbul or Cappadocia. I'll only be in Turkey for about 4/5 days and feel that I wouldn't be able to split my time, so I'd rather just focus on one place & see as much as I can. They both look amazing! I'll be making my way from Split, Croatia.
For anyone in Istanbul now or due to be there in the next few days or so here is an article which may interest you.It is a vibrant, busy centre and shows clearly that the refugees want work not charity.
If anyone wants to visit the craft centre take the tram from Sultanahmet as far as Çapa-Şehremini tram stop(8th stop after Sultanahmet) and then you have a 6-7 minute walk. It…
