Araf
Grungy English teachers, Erasmus exchange students and Turkish language students have long claimed this as their favoured destination, shaking their booties to the in-house gypsy band and swilling the cheapest club beer around (a mere TL5). To avoid the locals’ weekend mating madness and capacity crowds, go on Tuesday or Wednesday.

A year-round venue beloved of the city’s techno aficionados, who come here to appreciate the great mixes and scratches of some of the best DJs from Turkey and Europe. There’s a great sound system, a crowded dance floor and a lovely covered garden bar. Customers here tend to be young and affluent.

Sortie
Sortie has long vied with Reina as the reigning queen of the Golden Mile, nipping at the heels of its rival dowager. It pulls in the city’s glamour-pusses and poseurs, all of whom are on the lookout for the odd celebrity or tabloid fodder.

Dogztar
It’s a three-storey affair, but the compact size (300 persons max) makes for an acoustic powerhouse. The crowd comprises budding fans or hard-core followers of featured up-and-coming musical groups or DJs. And the owners altruistically give the collected cover charges to performers. They also charge reasonable drinks prices and provide a terrace for cooling off in summer.
