Şişman Efes Pub
Now this is a proper pub: wooden tables, doodling barman, music drowned out by the general hubbub and the eponymous Efes beer served in 2.5L towers (around €8) on request.

Fat Boys
The premier party joint in the village is akin to an office break room, but is surprisingly cool, with suitably loud pop-rock tunes, two large pool tables, classic bar food (think burger, fries and, er, Vegemite), all overseen by an Australian-Turkish couple with a penchant for the waterpipe and for long, generous pours.

Kalamiş
For a nargileh over a game of backgammon or okey (kind of Turkish dominoes) head for this atmospheric institution. Old men line the yellowed interior, but students (of both sexes) occupy the 1st floor.

Jimmy's Irish Bar
Jimmy's is still one of the biggest names in town, partly because it has the handiest position at the entrance to the street. For all of its mass-market, karaoke, 'hey, where you from?' faults, this can be a good place to meet other travellers (so long as you can hear what they're saying; it's very loud). The giant satellite dish on the roof beams in the compulsory football matches.

Beer Time
Another hostelry in the same vein as the Şişman, but spread over two whole storeys, with wooden floors and a largely male crowd just avoiding that spit'n'sawdust feel.

Random Bar
Next to Kuğulu Park, this popular watering hole with a cool patio draws everyone from post-work suits to pre-club charlatans. Catchy singalong Turkish music kicks in on weekends.

Pink
The oldest drinking establishment in Selçuk, it's referred to as a cafe, looks like a pub, but functions as a bar-cum-nightclub. Ask Mesut, the eager bartender, to demonstrate some magic tricks.

North Shield
Go on – wanting a cold pint in a dusty Kurdish city is not a hanging offence. Head to the North Shield in the Hotel Tamara for a familiar English pub-type ambience. After a couple of beers make a beeline for the excellent mangal restaurant upstairs.

Efes Pub
Two floors of smokey, blokey ambience with good bar snacks and draught Efes in 0.7L glasses and 2L 'beer towers' – perfect for sharing with the Russian sailors on the adjacent table. Female travellers may prefer Cingil Bar.

Biraver
Located at the cruise port's Scala Nuova shop, Biraver is the most popular spot in town for beer-toting locals. The homemade draught brews are surprisingly good.
