Leb-i Derya Richmond
This sleek younger sister of perennial favourite Leb-i Derya is more restrained and decidedly more chic than her big sis. Fortunately there's no threat of sibling rivalry, as the crowd here is older and more cashed-up. The views from the huge windows are just as fab.

5 Kat
This İstanbul institution is a great alternative for those who can't stomach the style overload at Mikla, 360 and the like. In winter, drinks are served in the boudoir-style bar on the fifth floor; in summer, action moves to the outdoor roof terrace. Both have great Bosphorus views.

Fat Boys
This lounge-style bar is a winner. We love the terrace, strewn with fat cushions, and curling up on the couches inside. The hungry can order from a global pub-grub menu which stars Aussie-style pies, as well as burgers, nachos and Vegemite on toast. While the pool table and board games are tempting diversions it's the friendly staff and well-stocked bar which make this place so popular.

Baylo
The much anticipated re-opening of the Pera Palace Hotel in the lower section of Asmalımescit has been accompanied by a boom in glamorous bistro-bars in its immediate vicinity. Of these, Baylo is undoubtedly the best. The elegant interior provides a perfect backdrop for the 30-something bankers, architects and other professionals who head here after a busy day at the office.

Cıncık
The grills, meze and salads at Cıncık are perfectly fine, but we really like the leafy and relaxed garden bar filled with Antep folk lounging on bean bags, and kicking back with a relaxed combo of draught Efes beer and the occasional nargile (water pipe). It's a shortish stroll through Atatürk Kültür Parkı from the city centre.

Angel Café Bistro
Straight from the big city comes this incongruously cool bar where Ürgüp's bright young things lounge around on the red beanbags out the front and hip-hop blasts from the stereo. It comes into its own after dark.
