Since joining Thorntree I have been delighted to read so many wonderful trip reviews. These are most often full of the small details so important and useful to independent travellers. How sad then that in time these slip down the forum pages and get lost or forgotten about. All that help…all that typing! So I have trawled through the last 12 months and collated all the trip reviews and, after equal amounts of bullying and flattery,Zabba(mmwwahh!)has agreed to make this a sticky,so it will now be at…

Well, what can I say?! Istanbul must be the most beautiful city in the world. I returned to London last night. I had such a lovely three days in Istanbul, chatting with people, eating as much as I could (but still not enough!), and balancing early morning museum visits with afternoon waterfronts and shopping. I wrote about each day on my blog if you would like to read it. The photos are mine except for the one in the first post because I hadn't transferred my photos by that time.

Hi:

I am Interested in possible taking the Train from Istanbul to Berlin. Probally about a month. I could stop in Budapest, Prague, on to Berlin. I could take the train from Berlin onto Warsaw. Has anyone taken this train trip?
I understand that some construction on the train tracks in Istanbul might be going on? I really like train travel.
Has anyone taken this route by Train. I could take some bus travel leaving Istanbul, if I have to. I would like to pass on cities that I have seen like…

I have almost planned my holiday from Tbilisi > Istanbul > Alexandroupolis (Greece) but have a real problem getting the bus/coach tickets from Istanbul to Alexandroupolis and back again. Everything else is booked so I have set dates I need to do for everything to match up. BUT the bus sites like MetroTourizm and KamilKoc only accept Turkish visa cards!! I have tried with both my Georgian and UK visa cards and they just error!

I am fairly sure I should be able to get the tickets I need when I…

Hi all.

I got a few reports about police harassing people taking photos in Istanbul for taking photos of roads and common buildings. But those are third hands reports and I don't know how much trust to put in them.
As I'm the kind of guy who like to travel to take maybe just one photo of a famous building and tens of normal places, I'd like to understand if -avoiding sensible targets like police stations or muslim women, obviously- the situation is really so grim or if I can go around…

Hi.
I need to go from Ataturk airport to Sabiha Gokcen airport. Do anyone know how to do this by public transportation? Or is it any buses that go direct from airport to airport?

Hi all! I am new to the Turkey forum (I have spent some time in the Tanzania one which seems a little quieter, mainly people asking confused questions about safaris) and I wanted to say hello :) I am coming to Istanbul this weekend for my first visit to Turkey and am very excited to see this beautiful city!

Hello,

I'm planning to pass through Turkey on my way to Iran this November.
So, I've done Eastern Turkey a few years back and this time my goal is to spend as little time as possible to reach the Iranian border, so I have more time in Iran.

The plan: Take the high-speed rail from Istanbul to Ankara, then the Dogu Express from Ankara to either Kars or Erzurum, and a bus or dolmus to Dogubayazit before hitting the border in a dolmus or taxi.

Questions -

  1. I've just realised the Dogu…
