Restaurants in Aegean Coast

  1. A
  2. Cafe du Port

The restaurant at Hotel Limani is popular for good reason. The glass-fronted building on the kordon is stylish and inviting, the chefs are the most versatile in Çanakkale and the service is brilliant for a regional city. Specialities include steaks, salads, pastas and whatever else inspires the manager on his regular gallivants to Istanbul. If nothing else, buy a cocktail.

  3. B

    Cafe Caramel

Beautiful Yasemin fronts this nostalgic cafe in the old town. Jazz soundtracks, an extensive cake and dessert menu, homemade soda and simple meals done well, Caramel hits the sweetest spot.

  4. Apropo

Apropo is one of the more interesting, opportune restaurants at the flashy, somewhat generic new Levant Marina complex to the south of the centre. The menu is essentially a choice of grilled meats, cooked to order, served on heaters alongside vegies and fries. The casual wood and tiled tables and chairs overlooking the water keep it family friendly yet trendy all the same.

  5. C

    Ankara Lokantası

Near the Basmane train station is this humble eatery that fills with local workers during the week and a relaxed drop-in crowd on weekends. It's a traditional 'point-and-pick' joint with loads of meat, rice and vegetable dishes.

  6. D

    Zıkkım

With shady garden seating just off the main road, Zıkkım makes a welcome mid-town pit stop, offering cheap köfte and salads (white-bean salad TL4).

  7. E

    Sir Winston Tea House

On a street known for its cafes, this is one of the best, serving dozens of teas, hot and cold coffees, good salads and pastas. There's shady seating outside. There's a second branch behind the Swissotel.

  8. F

    Saray

Saray does international fare and some decent Turkish choices, plus good vegetarian options. It can get kitschy during evening singalongs and on Wednesday's 'Turkish Night', though.

  9. G

    Rumeli

Occupying an Ottoman stone house, this 65-year-old pastane (patisserie) sells great ice cream (TL1.50 per scoop) from its side window, and stocks all manner of local jams, pickles and preserves.

  10. H

    Rıhtım Restaurant

One of the touristy fish restaurants on the waterfront, Rıhtım's fish fridge and wine rack are particularly well stocked. The large dining room, proudly displaying huge empty bottles of Metaxa (a Greek spirit), has more personality than the neighbouring places.

    Reyhan

This institution is serious about sweet stuff, with a professional taster and headset-wearing waiters. Decadent delights like strawberry cheesecake and almond-cream cake with pineapple and almonds sit alongside favourites like carrot cake and a yummy Turkish breakfast.

  13. J

    Planet Yucca

Billed rather bizarrely as a 'Mexican-Chinese-Turkish Restaurant', Planet Yucca really does make an earnest effort to be a veritable UN of cuisine. The lively and faithful clientele is a mix of continents as well. The menu competes with the Encyclopaedia Brittanica in length, so it's best to stick with the line-up of Turkish dishes for satisfying results. Free taxi pick-ups sweeten the deal.

  14. Panorama Restaurant

A friendly family restaurant en route to the ruins, Panaroma serves excellent mezes such as börülce (black-eyed peas), stuffed pumpkin flowers and avcı boreğı (hunter's börek; pastry filled with meat or cheese).

  15. K

    Paksoy Pide

Pint-sized Paksoy is clean and patronised by locals. Watch the chef rolling and flipping the pide classics in front of the oven.

  16. L

    Orfoz

Orfoz is often listed as one of Turkey's best seafood restaurants. While the meze portions are small, the fish mains are excellent.

This streetside place doesn't have views, but does have good pizzas, wraps and salads.

  18. Meydan Lokantası

  20. O

    Mehmet's Heaven

Long-established Mehmet's has an interior with wide cushions and a back terrace with travertine views. The Turkish fare is decent but Mehmet's heaven is now somewhere in purgatory as prices have crept up.

  21. Maydos Restaurant

A common stopping point on the Hassle Free Tour itinerary, Maydos has views across the Dardanelles and a very long, meaty menu. The meze (TL3.50 to TL12) are fresh and there's a good list of wines and rakı. It's 500m south of the centre.

  23. Market

Bergama has a bustling Monday market, which stretches from the old otogar to past the Red Basilica. It's great for fresh fruit and veg. Böblingen Caddesi and the area around the old bus station are good for picnic-hunting. Cheese, olives, fresh bread and dried fruit are all sold.

  24. Mantı & Börek Evi

Serving mantı (Turkish ravioli), avcı boreğı and a good range of mezes, this lokanta (eatery serving ready-made food) has a small terrace overlooking the main square. It's one of the only eateries on the hill offering beer.

  25. Limoon Cafe & Restaurant

On shady grounds in western Bodrum, Limoon offers cheap appetisers and soups (TL4 to TL5), plus mains – the chicken with mushrooms is excellent.

  26. Liman Restaurant

Worthy of a ferry ride from Canakkale, 'Harbour' is a humble and extremely popular fish restaurant with a delightful covered terrace. Service is sharp and unobstrusive.

    La Pasión

To see just how far Bodrum has come in its quest to join the ranks of international seaside sophistication, try this refined Spanish restaurant down a side street off Cumhuriyet Caddesi. The lunch menus change weekly and, given the intricacy of the entrees and desserts, are surprisingly good value (appetiser, mains, dessert and first drink are TL18 per person). The restaurant occupies an old stone home with a flowering courtyard, and there's Spanish music wafting through the breeze.
