Since joining Thorntree I have been delighted to read so many wonderful trip reviews. These are most often full of the small details so important and useful to independent travellers. How sad then that in time these slip down the forum pages and get lost or forgotten about. All that help…all that typing! So I have trawled through the last 12 months and collated all the trip reviews and, after equal amounts of bullying and flattery,Zabba(mmwwahh!)has agreed to make this a sticky,so it will now be at…

Hello everyone, and thanks in advance for any help or advice you maybe be able to provide me with.

This will be my first trip to Turkey, and I have a sort of a bucket-list lined up. The basic info:

  • Traveling solo

  • Tight budget, won't mind fewer luxury in terms of transport and accommodation for the sake of a better time invested.

  • A 6-7 days trip.

  • Around late August.

  • Would rather dedicate 2 days for Istanbul.

  • Definitely a day on Cirali…

Hi,

I am planning to travel to Iran via Turkey overland. As there is no other way (of course), I need to cross Kurdistan in Turkey to reach the boarder control for Iran. How safe is it there?

However, I didn't plan to stay there for long - maybe one day but def. not longer than 3 days - I would like to know how safe the region is. As I want to cross the boarder in Dogubayazit, which is in the North, I hope the conflict won't affect plans that much(?).

Thank you very much,

Imtgra

Hi all,

Me and a friend are going to hike on Kackar Mountains (Yusufeli to Ayder) for five days. I was wondering if anyone has suggestion about food. Initially, I thought we would not need to cook while camping as we would pass by a village almost everyday. We are now thinking if we should carry cooking equipment with us. Wold some nuts, water, dried fruits etc be enough to keep us fit or would you recommend cooking? We really want to be light while hiking.

Thanks!

Good afternoon,

We are going to be visiting Istanbul and we wanted to ask if anybody had any recommendations on where to purchase Mosaic-styled lanterns at the best/local prices. I know they are everywhere, including the Grand Bazaar but our preference is to avoid tourist prices.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

We are planning a trip to turkey, husband, wife and 2 kids aged 16 and 13. We plan to reach Istanbul on 9 August 2016. We are planning to rent a car from Istanbul and drive to Ankara and from there to Cappadocia for 2 days, then back from Cappadocia taking break in Konya and move to Antalya, and Kas. I would like to know is it a good road trip with rent a car or is it better to take multiple flights. We have a total of 12 days and we would like to explore Istanbul fro 3 days and Ankara for a…

Spotted in waters around Turkey and Cyprus - the Devil Firefish, a tropical creature with poisonous barbs and a painful sting that can kill.
Stings from its barbs are rarely fatal to humans, but can cause extreme pain, vomiting and respiratory paralysis.
Despite their conspicuous colours and slow movements, even sharks won't go near lionfish, giving them free rein to feed and wipe out other species that normally keep algae in check.
The first sightings of the fish in Mediterranean waters were off…

Hello,

Does anyone have experience with taking this company's ferry to Odessa? http://www.cenkgroup.net/en/. They tell me it's 400 USD one way, which seems awfully expensive, and they're not very responsive to email. But it seems like the only option now. I'd love to hear anyone's experiences with this. Thanks in advance!
