How to get there:

  • South African Airways (SAA) is South Africa's official airline and a member of the Star Alliance global airline network. SAA flies into Africa from over 20 destinations around the world.
  • Local buses, such as Greyhound and Translux, travel across South Africa.
  • Car rental companies are mostly located at airports in South Africa. There's Europcar Vehicle Hire, Avis, Dollar Car Hire and McCathy's Car Rentals.
  • Metered taxis will get to you to Long Street, or call a Rikki's taxi.

Costs:

Note: Almost all major credit cards are accepted by most of Long Street's formal traders. Bank operating hours: Mon-Fri 09:00-15:30 , Sat 8:00-11:00 . There are ATMs scattered across the city and suburbs. In Long Street there is an ATM at the bottom (First National Bank - FNB) and another at the top of the street (also FNB).

  • Local flights within South Africa are approximately R900* (one-way). There are also low-cost local airlines such as Kulula and Mango which, if booked in advance, can cost R500* to another city in South Africa.
  • Metered taxi from airport to Long Street: approx R175*.
  • Airport shuttle to Long Street and Cape Town central: approx R200*.
  • Accommodation: backpackers from R70* (for dorms).
  • Hotels: from R595* per night per person.
  • City tours: R100* per day.
  • Township tours: R180*.
  • Rikki's taxi services: R12* within Long Street and approx R25* to surrounding areas. The further the destination the more the cost, but they have fixed prices per zone.
  • Boat trip to Robben Island: R150*
  • Cable car up Table Mountain: R70* (one-way), R140* (two-way)
