In 2002, Robert went to Brazil for one week, stayed two, returned home to quit his job and sell all his wordly goods, and a month later was living in Copacabana. He later moved to São Paulo, and has also spent extensive time in the south of Brazil. He is co-author of Lonely Planet's Brazil, as well as Colombia, Portugal, California and West Africa, and his travel writing has also appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Miami Herald, the Houston Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News.
